Responsibilities
Counselors are an integral part of TSC communities. They lead TSC workshops and activities. They inspire campers to learn and play. Here's a sample of what you can expect to experience and accomplish:

Assist in direction, supervision, and organization of campers at camp sites and living units.

Help plan and host TSC daily workshops and cultural activities.

Collaborate with Chinese assistant counselors to guide campers on in-class projects.

Supervise campers to ensure compliance with camp health and safety procedures.

Attend workshop training sessions, program orientation, and staff meetings.

Provide campers written evaluations and communications as requested.
Counselors interested in leading visual art workshops and activities are expected to know basic art making processes. Depending on the workshop, counselors are expected to have experience in drawing, painting, print making, sculpting, and/or bookbinding. A basic familiarity with physical and digital tooling such as craft knives, awls, photoshop etc. is desired.

Prerequisites for Applying
Camp counselors are an indispensable part of TSC program. Recruited from top educational institutions in U.S., they are courageous and open-minded individuals who believe that intercultural exchange will make our world a more close-knit community.
In order to be considered, you must have the following items:
1. Pursuing a bachelor or master degree at an accredited institution in the U.S. Professional camp educators with a completed college degree are also welcomed to apply.
2. Must be a native English speaker or a citizen of an English speaking country.
3. Must have a GPA 3.2 or above (if applicable).

Training
You are all set! Soon after you receive your visa from the Chinese Embassy, we will starting booking your flights and send you an info package. Meanwhile, TSC will host pre-arrival training webinars for all counselors. When you arrive, you will attend TSC orientation before the camp officially starts.

FAQ

Do I need to know Mandarin in order to work as a counselor?No, you do not need to know Mandarin. At TSC, English is the main language. Therefore, everyone is encouraged to use English daily. However, every TSC counselor is assigned with a bilingual assistant counselor who will assist in translation if necessary.

Does the program cost money?No, the program does not cost money. Should you get accepted into the counselor program, TSC will cover international flights, room & board, and travel insurance, and pay counselors stipend. However, counselors do have to pay for their own visa application fee. Detailed information regarding visa application can be found here on the China Embassy Page.

What do I apply for the visa?You would be applying for an F-1 Visa at the nearest Chinese Embassy, depending on your geographic location. TSC will issue you an invitation letter that you can present to the embassy. You must be 18 years old at the time of your application and have a passport valid for at least 6 months before expiration. What do I have to do to prepare for this program?Thanks for taking the initiatives and asking us! Weeks prior to your arrival in China, TSC counselor training specialists will host online orientations to help you prepare for the trip. We will cover topics such as custom, culture, food, etiquette, language, program guidelines, and expectations. You will also connect with other incoming counselors during the orientation.

Do I have to be in college in order to apply?We typically accept applications from current undergradute students. However, if you are an incoming first-year student at an university, you are also welcomed to apply.

Where are TSC camps?TSC hosts camps in four cities in China: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Hefei, and Chengdu. You will be able to work at different camp locations.

Can I choose which city I want to work in ?We will ask you for your location preference. We will do our best to accommodate your request, but we cannot guarantee that you will work in your first-choice city. Four cities have their unique city cultures and vibes. Many past counselors found it an unforgettable experience to live in a new city.

Can I travel in China on my own after the camp?Yes, you may! In fact, you can travel before and /or after the program. Be sure to let us know your preferrable arrival and departure dates so that we can book your flights accordingly. Note: you will be responsible for living expenses incurred before and after the program

What is the program date this year?Program dates vary year by year, but they typically fall between July and August.

Can I attend two sessions at two different locations?Yes, you absolutely can. In fact, counselors are encouraged to travel and teach in different cities while they are in China.
